Why a well chosen domain name is like money in the bank

A domain name is the address you type into a browser when you want to visit a website. For example, the domain name of this site is asureimage.com.

Most businesses choose a domain name that closely matches their company name. For example, Joe's Plumbing might have the domain name joesplumbing.co.uk.

That's fine for any person who already knows the name of Joe's business, and is looking for him on the web. But what about all those people who are looking for a plumber, and don't know anything about Joe specifically?

Most people aren't going to enter “Joe's Plumbing” into Google. Instead, they're going type in something like “Plumbers in London” (or Camden or Swiss Cottage or West Hampstead).

With my search engine optimisation (SEO) clients, I recommend they get a domain based on their business name. But I also suggest we investigate domains based on common search terms for their industry. For example, one of my clients has the domain buildingsurveyor.co.uk.

Martin's website only has 5 pages, yet it got to page one of Google. And the domain name was a major contributor to that success.

The domain name you choose can help, or hinder, your site's performance in search engines. The fact is, a well chosen domain name is like money in the bank! The trick is knowing what terms to include in a domain name (that's where I come in).

Other factors come into play too. It's crucial your domain name selection is part of a professional search engine optimisation (SEO) exercise.
