Every person who visits your site has a different screen. Web designers typically have huge screens of very good quality, and little understanding of the constraints faced by other users. That's why some sites you visit use tiny little fonts that some people find hard to read.
Good web design will take this into account, and ensure the font size is large enough to be read even on small screens (e.g. a laptop), and by people with less than perfect vision.
The links on the page must be easy to spot. They must stand out from non-linked text. It's an easy thing to do, and I'm often left wondering why the web designer didn't think it necessary.
A custom error page allows you to capture people who've entered an incorrect or old URL, and direct them to content. It's a great way of helping your visitors find what they were looking for.

A Google sitemap isn't what you and I would normally think of as a sitemap. It's purpose is to tell Google how to index your site. It wouldn't normally be read by a human being.
