Better business web design

Pssst, want to know the secret to better business web design? Even some professional web designers ignore this secret, yet it's essential to ensure your business web site works.

The key to better web site design, is easy site navigation.

It doesn't sound like much of a design secret, does it? But take a good look around your competitor's web sites. Chances are, you'll find one or more of the following web design problems...

  • More than one navigation system
  • Different navigation systems on different pages
  • A navigation item that appears in different places on different pages
  • No obvious way to get back to the homepage
  • Defacto standards missing
  • Can't add more navigation options without a redesign (good for the web designer, not so good for you)

Navigation is a key component in good website design. Your site can look like a Botticelli, but will still annoy and confuse its visitors if they can't find anything.

Here are my recommendations to ensure easy site navigation...

  • Limit yourself to a single navigation system
  • Use a drop-down menu system
  • Place it in the same place on every page
  • Don't use buttons (see above)
  • Have the menu system's content incorporated into your CMS
  • Get a content management system that automatically updates the navigation system

By linking your site's content management system with proper menu-driven site navigation, you remove the confusion and guarantee consistency. You also ensure your site has no dead links, unlinked pages, or other problems that get in the way of good search engine performance.
