Submit your web directories (e.g. DMOZ
Web directories are still the mainstay of SEO link building. Be sure to visit this very useful list of 101 free directories you can submit your site to. That's 101 extra links to your site on top of the 66 different techniques listed on this page.

Use your Twitter account
Links from Twitter don't convey SEO value directly. Instead they have the potential to create buzz within Twitter itself, and that's what Google notices. Popular tweets will show up (albeit temporarily) at or near the top of Google's search results. This sends visitors to your site (as does Twitter itself), and over time you'll attract links from 3rd parties who discover the page through that original Tweet. One of the best ways to use this technique is to start a blog. Your blog should have a particular focus, and contain articles that will appeal to your target market. These articles will tend to be more interesting than sales copy, and tweets about them are more likely to attract clicks from Twitter users. This technique can be also be used as a source of visitors for lead generation.

Comment on an article on MegaResponse
Commenting on blog articles is another staple of SEO link building, but most blogs set the nofollow attribute (cancels out the SEO value you'd otherwise receive). MegaResponse doesn't cancel the SEO value. Here's my strategy for maximising both the SEO value conveyed and the likelihood of having my comment approved. Rather than the usual 'nice post' comment that everybody else makes, I read the article properly and contribute something useful to the author's conversation. This might be additional information, something I disagree with and my reasons for doing so, or an example of something that happened to me that relates to the author's blog entry.

Get a Delicious account
Delicious is a social bookmarking site, and makes it easy to share web content with others. It works best when you link to content that deals with a specific topic of interest. That's probably not your site's homepage. For example, an Elvis fan site might link to a page titled '21 things you didn't know about Elvis'.
-
Write a guest article for a popular blog in your industry
A blog that complements rather than competes with you, and that targets the same clients, can be an excellent source of high quality links. It's also a great source of leads. Contact the blog owner, and offer to write an article about a specific topic. If the owner accepts, write your article and submit it for consideration. Your article should include at least one contextual link. Blogs known to accept articles written by guest authors include MegaResponse, Web Marketing Talk, Lead Generation Expert and Online Success Magazine.

Write an article and submit it to Ezine Articles
Ezine Articles is the web foremost article publisher. It's the hardest site to get an article published on, but delivers the most SEO value back to your site. Ezine Article has a huge community (i.e. built-in source of traffic to your site). This makes it an excellent site to use for article marketing. From an SEO perspective, the link in your article is nofollowed. This means SEO value isn't conveyed to another website through this link. You need to use the link in the article's author profile to get SEO value. Be sure to write an author profile that the reader's of your article will be interested in, so they'll click through and visit your site. Find out more about article marketing.
